ATC3k Action Camera Review

The Good: The ATC3k action camera has a wider camera lens, means more action on camera, the ATC3k can be used as a webcam for skype, plus the 4Gb capacity is great as it means that you can get up to 2hrs recording
The Bad: It looks just like the ATC2K – just black…
The Action Cameras Bottom Line: For just a little more in price, you get a lot more with the ATC3k so it’s a must for anyone wanting to film their extreme sports at a reasonable price.

can’t wait until the end of the month for it to be released in the UK.

What is the video quality like? I bought a ATC2K but then sold it again as the quality wasnt good enough. Have the Oregon guys done any work here? Cheers.

Hi Tony,
The main changes with the ATC3K is all the new features and functions. The video quality is still the same resolution but Oregon has worked on the light adjustments and clarity to get better footage. There is definitely a noticeable improvement.

I got my ATC3K in the mail a few days ago. I have only used it once, but was happy with the results. Considering the ATC3K is small and fairly cheap, I can’t compain about the quality. I put a 4gig SDHC chip in mine and I get 2 hours of video. If the camera was higher resolution, it would store much less. I appreciate the 2hr storage.

I think the buttons are a little on the hard side to press, but if you are doing extreme sports, you don’t want to accidently turn it off, I guess.

I put it on my mountain bike handle bars for a ride. Can’t wait to put it to a real test when I go to Mammoth Mountain with it!

So the ATC3K is definitely SDHC compatible, because I haven’t read anywhere on the oregon site if it is or not…

Hi Mike,
Yes the ATC3K is compatible with SDHC. In fact, all the SD cards that we sell along with this camera are SDHC.

Hi, I just ordered my ATC3K for paintball and some holiday footage, just a quick one really, it’ll still utilise normal SD cards won’t it?

Clark, yip it will still work fine with any standard SD card up to 4Gb. Please don’t be shy about sending us some footage from paintballing! We’re always keen to put some great videos up here on the blog…

Thanks for the reviews everyone. I’m looking forward to receiving my ATC3K in the next couple of days. I wish I had it for my past fishing trip. I would’ve loved to capture my first Dorado on video. If you’ve ever fished for Dorado’s, you’d know exactly what I mean. Having them fly out of the water like Marlins is priceless.

Tommy, where’s the best place to fish for Dorado around the UK? I’ve caught them before off South Africa’s Wild Coast; they always sit just on the dirty water line and give such a great fight :) Its such a shame that their colours fade away so quickly once they’re out of the water.
I definitely agree that filming that from your own point-of-view would be brilliant!

Why is the ATC3K limited to a 4GB SD card? Why can’t it take something bigger?

Thanks guys.

Hi Will. Oregon Scientific have done their best to keep the ATC3K as compact and as reasonably priced as possible. If they put in a faster and bigger drive then the price would be higher.
The 4Gb gives you 2hrs of recording which is more then any other self-contained action camera available; and if you do want to record more then you can easily and quickly change to a back up card.

Bought an ATC2K. Works really great in bright daylight but in slightly dim lighting conditions, most images come out dark. In the night, it picks out only the brightest of street lamps and headlights of oncoming vehicles.

Would have been nice to read an original review instead of one plagiarized from CNET -

Have the ATC2K. I’ve had problems figuring out how to mount it to my surfboard. I’ve seen rigs using a dentpuller, but the mount doesnt fit it or any of the others in the stores. Any tips??

Is it possible to link it via USB constantly to record or is it only possible to capture on the SD card?

Hi,

Im interested for the above mentioned camera (ATC3K) and also the newer ATC5K. Does anyone know if apart from wider FoV and LCD display, the ATC5K has better video quality than the ATC3K !!!

Also i am after a raw video clip for the above cameras (not youtube compressed) so i can see the quality of the footage !!!

Thanks,

George

Hi guys,
The ATC3K has proven very popular lately.
Mounts are included for helmet, head, handlebar, plus a webcam tripod plus is does record sound.
Mounting onto other objects such as surfboards is usually best achieved with some creativity and some gaffer tape :)
It records onto the SD and can then be downloaded but it can’t be streamed live unfortunately.
The release of the ATC5K (at just a little extra cost) has been exciting and the differences lie in the slightly wider field of view, the fact that it can take still photos, plus the 1.5″ LCD screen which is fantastic! The video quality is the same res but a quicker chip inside makes for crisper footage.

Thanks to everyone for keeping the questions flowing!

Does the camera take a standard SD card or the mini/micro variant?

Hi guys,

Forgot to mention, the ATC5k has a wireless IR remote control to Start/Stop recording which the ATC3k doesn’t have.

The ATc3k and ATC5k records on standard SD Cards and on 4Gb SDHC Cards.

Any more questions, we are here to help !!

hi All,

can anyone tell me what the max capacity sd card for the atc2k?? can i put sdhc card in it??
i have a 1gb card but i dont seem to get much footage on it before it switches itself off? im not sure if it’s the card capacity or the batteries though? does anyone know? i read here that someone gets 45 mins on new batts and mine have been in a while - maybe its the batts that makes it switch off and 1gb will be fine? - saying that i will get a bigger card and some new batts and try but confirmation of max card size for atc2k would be great!!

Thanks,

Andy

Hey everyone, I own an ATC2K but am interested in the ATC3K because of the wider angle lens. Has anyone done a comparison of the two cameras to show how much wider the field of view is? You can visit my YouTube site to see some surfing shots I took using my ATC2K.

Thanks,

Hey all, thanks for all the great feedback here.
Andy, what you’ve described shouldn’t be happening, it may be that your 1Gb card has been corrupted so try a different card. If this doesn’t help then contact Action Cameras for further help.
Kurt, to be honest, the FOV increase from the ATC2K to the ATC3K is not that much. In our opinion the fact that you can get 4Gbs into it is the greatest improvement.

I own the ATC2K and upgraded to the ATC5K. The picture is much better than the old one, but the handle bar attachment is as good an example of poor design as you can get. It’s not stout enough to hold the weight of the camera while you are sitting. The clip that screws into the yoke that surrounds the camera is also poorly designed. I’m thinking I might have to use duct tape to attach it to my helmet. Oregon Scientific should have put more thought into the external features of the camera.
