HD Helmet Cameras: Nicety or Necessity?

With just about every kind of technology going HD crazy, it was just a matter of time until helmet cameras followed suit. VholdR was the first to reach the HD finish line by announcing its new ContourHD which was coined the world’s first HD helmet camera. More recently we’ve had word from GoPro that in October it is launching its GoPro HD Helmet Hero, which it calls the first true HD helmet camera! This HD expression is really quite confusing which leads us to ask the questions; what exactly is HD and do I really need it?

Since the early days of helmet cameras when we were plugging CCTV cameras into recorders and gaffer-taping them to our helmets, we’ve seen the launch of many new generations of helmet cams.
Naturally, each new version has some exciting feature or benefit which tops its predecessors and competitors and quite naturally, this particular feature is heavily promoted to persuade buyers that this is now the ‘must have’ helmet cam. That is, of course, until the next helmet cam hits the market. Surely having HD quality is just the next inevitable step.

What we have appreciated is that the various helmet camera brands such as GoPro, Oregon Scientific, VholdR, Drift Innovation and VIO have started to address our main focus; what do you as extreme sport enthusiasts really want in your action camera? New features such a colour screens, wireless remote controls, wide angle lenses and innovative mounts are being focused on and in our view point, these features are as important, if not more important, as the video quality that the camera delivers. After all if you can’t use your helmet cam easily, quickly and hands-free in the toughest of sports situations then it’s not fit for purpose.

So, back to the point; what is HD? High definition recording is the quality captured by the recorder in terms of the video’s resolution. The answer to whether you really need a HD helmet cam can be answered by asking yourself another question: what am I going to use my helmet cam’s footage for? If you have a HD enabled TV then go for it! If you are going to upload your footage to the net or watch it on a normal TV, then having a HD helmet camera is more of a nicety then a necessity.

The advice from Action Cameras is to look at the all round package that you are considering, think about what sports you are going to be using it for and what mounts you are going to be using too. From there, decide which camera would be best for what you are going to be using it for and then get filming!

We’re hoping to clean up at the London Business Awards!

We like to think of ourselves as a great team of guys who are specialists on helmet cameras and reasonably good at business. Our perception may change soon as our company has been short-listed for three separate categories within the North and West London Business Awards 2009.

In 2008, Action Cameras Ltd was recognised as a finalist for Growth Business, now we’re back in the running to win the category as well as Business of the Year! We’re proud to announce that our third category is a personal recognition of one of our team members; Warrick Kernes has been short-listed within the Outstanding Young Person of the Year category!

We’re hoping to bring you some good news after the awards ceremony at the end of the month! Holding thumbs!

Head cam helps assist village police

A VILLAGE PCSO has been given another pair of eyes in her bid to tackle crime.

Police community support officer Karen Juniper, who covers Forest Row, Coleman’s Hatch, Hartfield, Holtye and Hammerwood, can now use a head camera to assist with her duties.

The piece of equipment is one of three recently introduced to Wealden by Sussex Police, using £80,000 of Home Office funding.

Pcso Juniper said: “I fully support it, because it means I have an extra pair of eyes helping me. I can only see it being a good, positive addition to our resources and I look forward to using it more often.”

The cameras, which cost £1,000 each, take visual and sound recordings and the footage can be used as evidence to support officers in their work.

They can be used by police constables and PCSOs during their normal patrols and are particularly effective in dealing with anti-social behaviour and domestic violence, according to Wealden neighbourhood policing inspector Richard Allum.

“These cameras are designed for officers to wear during their patrols to assist with evidence gathering,” he said. “It’s been shown elsewhere that they can be a terrific help when dealing with suspects as they show exactly what happened at the time the officers dealt with the incident.”

Pcso Juniper said the camera has been well received by young people since it was introduced.

“On one occasion I came into contact with a group of youngsters and they said it was a very good idea,” she added. “I was quite surprised by their response, but it helps them as much as it helps us.

“Their immediate reaction made them believe it would be used to catch them out if they were up to something. But it could be used to their advantage if they came into trouble in another situation.

“My camera can record and support my statement to help protect people and prove what has actually happened.”

High Speed Street Crash – Bike Hits Bike!

The person sliding along the ground was the rider of the motorcycle with the camera that was crashed into. Not sure how he came off. His left leg was fractured. Perhaps he was stunned by the pain…..and fell off? The white bike did not crash and continued along. The rider of the white bike said that he was not at fault and that the owner of the camera bike swerved into him……the video shows differently.

Remember to protect yourself by recording while riding. For those in the U.K. check out ActionCameras for your recording needs.

In the near future I plan on getting a setup from them to constantly record while I ride. You never know when you’ll need a camera on your vehicle.

Smokers beware – you are now on camera

News Article from Ayrshire post:
Aug 14 2009 by Lisa Boyle

SMOKERS beware – for all eyes will be on you in a bid to crackdown on smoking in public. Enforcement officers will have cameras strapped to their heads to catch those willing to flout the strict no-smoking law.

The new gear will help officers collect evidence against those caught puffing in public places. Gordon Lawder, senior environmental health officer, explained: “The smoking legislation allows one officer to go out without corroboration. “The head cameras are being used to alter the balance of doubt. At the moment it’s the officers word against the person. The cameras will make things more transparent.”

Since the smoking legislation was introduced, 57 fixed penalties have been handed out to smokers. And a further five have been dealt to licensees who haven’t adhered to the new law. A spokesperson for trading added: “Although compliance rates in South Ayrshire are high there have been occasions in the past where the evidence of a breach has been challenged.”
The equipment consists of a small camera at eye level attached to a recording unit. Recordings are securely encrypted so that only special equipment can play it back and the recording cannot be altered in any way. Officers will declare that the equipment is recording to make people aware of it. Only footage which may be required for future proceedings will be retained. All other footage will be deleted at the end of the working day. Councillor Peter Convery concluded: “The equipment has already been used by police and other enforcement agencies in the UK and proven to be very successful. “Experience shows that evidence recorded by the head camera leads to a higher rate of fixed penalty notices being paid as well as a reduction in aggressive reactions from those caught breaching the ban.”
