Gopro Surf Hero Review
The Good: There’s never been a better way to film yourself riding the wave, this has great quality, 30m waterproofed, and is easy to mount plus it can be used for loads of other water sports.
The Bad: It is a pricey kit to just attach to your board and hope it doesn’t come off…
The ActionCameras Bottom Line: All surfers want to brag to their bros about the waves that they caught and the moves that they pulled, now we can prove it! If you are saving up for new boardies then make sure to get someone else to get this for you.
Over the past two years GoPro has brought us a range of cameras for onboard filming but this is the first camera released by them or anyone else designed to mount straight onto your surfboard to film and photograph your moves.
It connects to the board with one of two removable mounts; the first is a stick on baseplate which the camera can be connected and disconnected to very easily. Your other option is the FCS compatible plug mount which requires an FCS center fin plug to be installed in top deck of board 9” back from shortboard nose or on tip of longboard nose.
A worry of ours when using this was; “What if we go for the big breaks and have an even bigger wipe-out??” Well the Surf Hero has two safety fall-backs to prevent your Surf Hero being lost to the surf; there is a safety attachment holding it to the base plate in case it came out of its bracket and if the whole base plate came off then there’s a loop that you can put over the lead from the board to your ankle, and as a last resort, it does float and it’s got bright orange colouring.
So we think it’s safe to say that GoPro has thought this one through…
The camera itself has really impressive quality footage and the pictures come out at 5Mp which is fantastic for a small camera like this. It can be set to take a pic every two or five seconds which gives a great result for surfers. You’re also able to set it up with the 5-sec delay or a 3X sequence photo burst.
With 2Gb expandable memory you can get 56 mins recording or over 1900 photos, and did we mention that it is waterproofed to 30 meters!
This is a great choice and is soon going to be the next must have accessory when you’re sitting on the backline waiting for the next set – now you won’t miss the shot!
