7 Tips to get great shots with your GoPro

7 Tips to get great shots with your GoPro

After you get your action camera, you need to learn how to use it properly to make amazing videos. Wearable action cameras will let you capture excitement-packed footage in a way that’s simply impossible with a conventional standalone cam. Whether you’re looking for incredible slow-mo shots or an awe-inspiring time-lapse, a decent action cam makes it all easy.

1. Know your mount

Whether your GoPro is going on your SUP, snowboard, helmet, or your dog, it pays to be familiar with your mount’s movement. A choppy film can be fun (for a few seconds) but only if you’ve planned it that way. Before you film your shots, test the angles and the outcome. Mounting your GoPro on the handlebars of your bike is significantly bumpier than a helmet- or chest-mount, since the body’s motion absorbs jolts more readily than the bars.

If you have the budget invest in a gopro gimbal. A gimbal is a motorised stabilizer that actively cancels out any vibrations and movements from your body to make the video footage silky smooth. They are well worth the investment if you are looking for professional footage. The GoPro Karma Grip is a a gimbal made by GoPro, but there are many more options. Before you decide which model, You read the latest GoPro gimbal reviews, to make sure you make the best purchase.

2. Check your angles

Action cameras tend to have very wide angle lenses to pack in as much activity and scenery as possible. When shooting at 1080p, the latest GoPro offers wide, medium or narrow fields of view – we reckon the narrow or medium options are best as the lens is so wide anyway, and the extra-wide setting tends to result in a ‘barrel effect’ with lots of distortion around the edges.

3. Don’t Just Take One Shot

One of the best GoPro photography tips I can give is to never just take a single shot. If you check out the settings on your camera you will see that you have the option for both time lapse or burst shots.

By taking more than one shot you increase your chances of getting the ideal photo that you’re looking for and you don’t have to worry about any blurry or out of frame images.

4. Utilize Slow-Mo Video

GoPros come with several settings that allow videographers to manipulate the speed and size of the frames. By setting your camera to 1080p at 60 frames per second, you’ll capture video that you can later slow down to dramatic effect. Mixing in these segments gives depth to the story and can help match any corresponding background music.

5. Less Is More

There might be 90 minutes of footage to choose from in the editing process, but the best videos find a way to distill that into 90 seconds. One person even reduced his average work day into one entertaining minute. A lot of user-generated content, they have this great adventure, but it’s six minutes long, You can tell a good story in two minutes. So be ruthless. Only select the very best moments from you video and cut the rest. People only want to see the best bits.

6. Tell a Story

Capture everything before, during, and after the climactic moment so that when it’s time to edit, there’s context behind that high-altitude triumph or epic descent. You can’t tell a story if you only have 30 seconds of footage.

The GoPro Capture and Quik software, now has an automatic feature, that can sync your footage to music. It’s not perfect, but if you are in a rush, then

Make sure you have enough space on your memory card to film your whole adventure, and don’t forget to…

7. Keep an Eye on the Battery Life

Nothing is worse than going to take a video as you drop in to an untracked powder field to find that your GoPro has run out of batteries. There are two ways that you can easily manage the battery life on your camera.

Be religious about charging your gopro every day. And switch it off between shots. I know from experience that this is hard to do.

Alternatively, I would recommend that you can purchase a few spare batteries and bring them with you. This way you don’t ever have to leave your GoPro behind the charge and running out of battery life will become one less thing you to worry about.

Get shooting!

The most important thing is to always have your camera with you. The more you film the more your will learn what makes a good edit. Switch it on when ever you can, and make some great videos!
